Entertaining and Intelligent Books for Summer

Now that summer is here, it is time to kick back, relax, and never go to school, ever again.

Well, definitely kick back and relax, but after school is more school and then real life work, so better to kick back with a book that is fun and will help you stay sharp.

Here are a couple books that fit the bill:

blink Summit Prep | Academic and Entrance Exam Tutoring

“Blink”

By Malcolm Gladwell

Much of this book clips along at the pace of an action thriller.  It is a page turner of pop- psychology and examines the incredible feats of processing that our brains can accomplish without our awareness.  “Blink” will keep you engaged and thinking about what your brain is thinking.

freakonomics Summit Prep | Academic and Entrance Exam Tutoring

“Freakonomics”

By Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner

This book easily bucks economic’s infamous title of the “dismal science.”  There is nothing dismal about this book.  It will help change the way you think about the world and the causes and effects you see around you.

naked statistics Summit Prep | Academic and Entrance Exam Tutoring“Naked Statistics”

By Charles Wheelan

I can essentially guarantee it is the most fun (and likely the only fun) statistics book you will ever read.  Now, saying “it is the most fun statistics book” still might not sound fun.  But, if you are interested in a main course of learning, an appetizer of dry humor, a side of good and engaging writing, followed by a dessert of changing the way you think, then this is a perfect book for you.  Statistics can help us to analyze and understand the world and to make better decisions.  But, bad data and bad analysis of that data can just as easily mislead us and cause us to make poor choices.  “Naked Statistics” will make you a better thinker and a better decision maker.
