Why AP Exam Scores Are Important

For College Admissions

AP exam scores are now more important for college admissions than ever before for two reasons:
  1.  With the discontinuation of SAT subject tests in January of 2021, the top 50 colleges need to look elsewhere for these standardized metrics for college applicants. Where will they look? To the standardized metrics that remain: SAT and ACT scores and AP exam scores.
  2. Grade inflation is higher than ever before in U.S. history — half of all high school students have an A-average. There was already great ambiguity surrounding high school grades given the more than 40,000 high schools in the U.S. (not to mention international students and home-schooled students): there is no guarantee that an “A” at one school will be equivalent to an “A” at another. But the pandemic and increase in at-home online schooling has dramatically increased college admissions’ officers uncertainty surrounding at-home grades: there is more cheating than ever before, many schools have moved to all open-note tests, and colleges are left wondering what conclusions they can draw from online grades.

For College Course Credit

In addition to helping students gain admittance to top colleges, getting 4’s or 5’s on AP exams typically give students college course credits. The college credits allow students to skip taking classes in college so that students can:

  1. Concentrate on the fewer courses that they’re taking and do better in those courses.
  2. Take other courses that interest them or help them more
  3. Graduate early (and save money on tuition by doing so)
